About New York Life
New York Life Insurance Company is one of the largest insurance companies in the world. Its worldwide headquarters are in New York. In 2019, New York Life Insurance bought out Cigna’s disability and life division. However, they continue to operate as Cigna Life Insurance in Canada in some situations. New York Life offers both short-term and long-term disability benefits.
New York Life Insurance Long-Term Disability
New York Life Insurance provides long-term disability benefits through group insurance policies. They also offer individual policies.
New York Life Insurance (CIGNA) is unique in that it provides long-term disability benefits for companies that have employees working in other countries, or those who travel regularly internationally. If you work for a Canadian division of a U.S.-based company, then it’s possible you will have disability coverage through this company. These claims can be difficult to manage because you will deal with claims representatives based in the United States.
If you get approved, then you will receive benefits based on your pre-disability income. You can receive benefits for as long as your plan allows. Benefits might last until a certain age or until you no longer meet the definition of disability. You will have to check with your plan administrator for the specifics. Or, you can check your coverage through the online portal.
New York Life Insurance also has vocational coaches who will work together with you and your employer to get you safely back to work.
Short-term Disability Claims
New York Life Insurance (CIGNA) provides short-term disability insurance to other businesses through group insurance plans. They offer different short-term disability plans. So, it’s important to get a copy of your employer’s group benefits booklets to understand your benefits.
If they deny your claim, then you can usually do 2-3 internal appeals. If they deny all appeals, then your final option is to bring a lawsuit against them. In other words, you would sue them for your short-term disability benefits.
Applying for Long-Term Disability

Appealing a Denial
There are many reasons that your claim might be denied. For example, if you don’t meet the definition of disability, if your condition isn’t covered, or if your medical information suggests that you can still work. These are just a few reasons.
Don’t worry though — your journey doesn’t end here. If New York Life Insurance denies your application, they will inform your employer and the HR department. Then they should send you a letter with the reason for denial. After you receive this letter, you will have a chance to appeal the decision within 180 days. The letter will also tell you what additional information you might need to submit, and where you can send it.
At this point, it’s a good idea to contact a disability lawyer. They have experience and will be able to help you understand your next steps.
